This engineer vocabulary was created to help you understand the terms and concepts we use every day in our work.

Analysis - The process of examining something in detail to understand its properties, behavior, or function. 

Automation - The technology by which a process is performed without human assistance. 


Axle - A rod or shaft on which a wheel or gear rotates.

B

Battery - A device that stores electrical energy.

Bearing - A machine element that constrains relative motion and reduces friction.

Big Data - Extremely large datasets that require specialized tools and techniques for processing.

Blueprint -A detailed technical drawing used in construction and engineering.

BOM- Bill of Materials, it is a source of information containing a list of items and instructions to to design or manufacture a product

Cantilever - A beam or structure that extends outward, supported at only one end.

Circuit - A closed path through which electrical current flows.

Crank - A mechanical device that converts circular motion into linear motion.

Current - The flow of electrical charge.

D

Data Pipeline - A sequence of automated steps for processing and moving data.

Data Warehouse - A central repository for structured data from various sources.

Design - The process of creating something, including the initial concept, planning, and detailed specifications.

ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) - A process for extracting data from various sources, transforming it, and loading it into a data warehouse.

Friction - The force that opposes motion between two surfaces.

Hydraulic - Relating to fluids in motion.

Joint - A connection or junction between two or more parts.

L

Lever - A simple machine that transmits force.

Load - The weight or force that a structure or component must support.

M

Magnitude - The relative size or extent of something.

Material - The substance or substances of which something is composed.

Mechanism - A device consisting of interconnected parts that work together to perform a specific function.

Momentum - The product of a body's mass and velocity.

Optimization - The process of making something as effective or functional as possible.

P

Perimeter - The distance around the boundary of a two-dimensional shape.

Plug - A connector for an electrical device.

Pneumatic - Relating to compressed air.

Prototype - An initial model or sample of a product used for testing and refinement.

Resistance - The opposition to the flow of electrical current.

Schema - The structure of a database, including tables, columns, and relationships.

Socket - A receptacle for a plug.

Spark - A sudden release of electrical energy.

Surface area - The total area of the surface of a three-dimensional object.

T

Transformer - A device that transfers electrical energy between circuits.

V

Valve - A device that controls the flow of a fluid.

Voltage - The electrical potential difference.

Volume - The amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object.
